Euphorbia Milii, also known as Crown of Thorns, is a broad-leaf evergreen, native to Madagascar. It has fleshy, bright-green leaves, thick sharp black thorns, and tiny flowers that grow in clusters and that are subtended by spectacular red or yellow bracts that look like petals.
The flowers are small, subtended by a pair of conspicuous petal-like bracts, variably red, pink or white . Crown of Thorns flower dependably when they get enough light. They are easy to grow and drought-tolerant, prefering slightly dry, sandy soil. This succulent stores water in its thick stems just like a cactus, so it can be watered less frequently than other house plants. The plant thrives between spring and summer but produces flowers all year round. If its leaves turn yellow and fall off, cut back on the watering.
Care and Nature
Watering
- Water the plant when the soil feels dry to touch ( Approximately one to two cups ) .Water thoroughly in the summer and reduce watering for the winter & rainy season
Lighting
- Grows well and sufficiently in ample sunlight conditions
- Plants that don't bloom aren't getting enough light. Move Crown of Thorns to a sunny area where it gets about 4 hours of direct sun every day.
Soil and Fertilization
- fertilize the plant mostly in the spring season.
- provide additional fertilizers if required
Pruning
- Prune off growing tips to control plants height.
Caution: Do wear safety gloves when handling the plant, as it contains sharp thorns which can cause bruises.
